Inputs to Full Picture

◆ The Basics

What Is LTV (Customer Lifetime Value)?

LTV (also called CLV or CLTV) is the total revenue a single customer generates throughout their entire relationship with your business.

◆ Core LTV Formula for SaaS ◆

LTV = (Average Revenue Per Account x Gross Margin %) ÷ Monthly Churn Rate

For example: ARPA = $500/month, Gross Margin = 80%, Monthly Churn = 3%
LTV = ($500 × 0.80) ÷ 0.03 = $13,333

◆ The Basics

What Is CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)?

CAC is the total cost of acquiring one new customer, including all sales and marketing spend divided by the number of new customers acquired in the same period.

◆ CAC Formula ◆

CAC = Total Sales & Marketing Spend ÷ Number of New Customers Acquired

For example: $50,000 spent in Q1, 100 new customers
CAC = $500

◆ The Key Metric

What Is the LTV:CAC Ratio?

The LTV:CAC ratio divides Customer Lifetime Value by Customer Acquisition Cost:

◆ LTV:CAC Ratio Formula ◆

LTV:CAC = LTV ÷ CAC

A ratio of 3:1 means every $1 spent acquiring a customer returns $3 over their lifetime — the widely cited benchmark for a healthy SaaS business. Ratios below 3:1 suggest you're overspending on acquisition or underperforming on retention. Ratios above 5:1 suggest you may be under-investing in growth.

◆ Cash Flow Lens

CAC Payback Period: How Long to Recoup Acquisition Costs

An equally important metric is the CAC Payback Period — how many months it takes to recoup the cost of acquiring a customer from that customer's gross margin contribution.

◆ CAC Payback Period Formula ◆

CAC Payback Period = CAC ÷ (ARPA x Gross Margin %)

If CAC = $500, ARPA = $99, Gross Margin = 80%:
Payback Period = $500 ÷ ($99 × 0.80) = 500 ÷ 79.20 = 6.3 months

Benchmarks:

Under 12 months Healthy for most SaaS businesses

12–18 months Acceptable for well-funded companies

Over 18 months Cash flow strain without strong financing

◆ For Affiliate Marketers

Why LTV:CAC Matters for Affiliate Marketers

If you promote SaaS tools, understanding LTV:CAC makes you a better affiliate marketer:

🎯

Better program selection

Programs with strong LTV (high-retention SaaS) can afford to pay higher commissions. Find those programs.

✍️

Content positioning

“This tool has a 3x LTV:CAC ratio” is more compelling than generic praise in reviews.

🧮

Your own affiliate business

Treat each piece of content as a customer acquisition channel. What's your CAC for producing an article vs. the LTV of the affiliate commissions it generates?

◆ Frequently Asked

Questions, Answered Honestly.

3:1 is the industry standard benchmark. However, early-stage companies may accept ratios as low as 2:1 while building their product and retention systems.

You can improve it by:

  • Reducing churn to increase LTV
  • Improving gross margin to increase LTV
  • Reducing customer acquisition costs through organic channels (SEO, affiliate)
  • Improving average contract value through upselling

Always use gross-margin-adjusted LTV. Revenue-based LTV ignores the cost of serving each customer and overstates the true value.

Know your ratio. Fix your funnel.

Scale with confidence.

LTV:CAC is the single most important ratio in SaaS unit economics. A 3:1 ratio is healthy — below that, you're overspending on acquisition or underperforming on retention.
